Transcarpathia is situated in the south-western part of Ukraine, on the slopes of the beautiful Carpathian mountains. Mild climate makes for the evolution and preservation of the unique flora and fauna.
Almost the half of the region territory is covered with the thick forests (beech, spruce, oak, hornbeam, fir - tree). Exotic southern plants, such as Japanese cherry and magnolia, can also be found here. The zone of wild forests turns into the flowering subalpine and alpine meadows - polonyna.
Comparatively small area contains over 2600 species and varieties of plants and more than the half of fauna specimens of Ukraine. There are bear, wild boar, fox, wolf, trot, deer, wild goat, otter etc. in the Carpathian forests. Besides, more than 180 species of birds, such as wood-grouse, black grouse, woodpecker, partridge, siskin, cuckoo, pheasant, snipe, falcon, eagle can be found here. Our rivers and lakes are full of various species of fish.
There are several reserves and parks in Transcarpathia. The most famous ones are "Narcissus Valley" near Khust, "Chorna Gora" ("Black Mountain") near Vynohradiv, and "Julius Hills".
High into the mountains you'll find the Transcarpathian legend edelweiss, which is a very rare flower.
